The Society of Mary
The Society of Mary, whilst being one of the Catholic Societies of the Church of England, has members in churches and countries all over the world. The objects of the Society are:
- To love and honour Mary.
- To spread devotion to her in reparation for past neglect and misunderstanding and in the cause of Christian Unity
- To take Mary as a model in purity, personal relationships, and family life.
On the Cross, in the midst of his Passion, Jesus entrusted His Blessed Mother to the Church and the Church to His Mother as He turned to Mary and said ‘Woman, behold your son!’ and then to St John, the Beloved Disciple, who represented the whole Church, ‘Behold your mother!’
Mary loves the Church, and all Christians with the tenderness of a mother, and the honour of a queen, and so we too rely upon her with the love of children and the steadfast loyalty of subjects.
All our hopes in turning to Mary to carry our prayers to Jesus, her most beloved Son, can be summed up in the words of the Memorare, a prayer from the middle ages:
Remember,
O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that any one who fled to thy protection,
implored thy help or sought thy intercession,
was left unaided.
Inspired with this confidence,
I fly unto thee,
O Virgin of virgins my Mother;
to thee do I come,
before thee I stand,
sinful and sorrowful;
O Mother of thy Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in thy clemency hear and answer me.
Amen.
